On this showing, the FA Cup has certainly not lost any of its romance as both teams gave their all in a full blooded match, with Lewes ultimately nicking the win with a late penalty.
Peacehaven had the first meaningful chance when Burton had a strong shot from outside of the box parried away by Lewes keeper Banks. Minutes later, good work by Brotherton for the home team saw his shot go just past the post.
On 17minutes a half chance on the edge of the box saw McCreadie fed through, for him to calmly slot past the diving Banks. 1-0.
Walder had a fierce shot blocked for Lewes, then straight up the other end Banks saved well from another Brotherton effort.
On 30 minutes Logan beat the offside trap and was through on goal, only for Dryer to save Haven’s blushes with a last gasp challenge.
Just before the break Weeler put in a good shot from the left which DiBernado punched clear. The Rooks were the happier team to see half time.
From the re-start Lewes began with more urgency and purpose. Within two minutes they had equalised. Dixon’s effort into the top corner levelled the scores. 1-1.
54 minutes saw Haven retake the lead with a fine header by Burton meeting Dryer’s free kick. 2-1.
McCreadie then had two quick opportunities to extend the lead, ultimately missing both. Five minutes later, a great move by Haven ended with McCreadie sliding in, only for his shot to hit the post.
Lewes then changed the game bringing on the fresh legs of Olorunda and Crabb.
73 minutes the ball dropped invitingly to Walder just outside the box, who let loose a screamer of a volley that went in just under the bar. 2-2.
At this time, the game was swinging from end to end, with the teams well matched. Haven did start to live a little dangerously as Lewes pushed for the winner, having a shot blocked on the line, and another effort saved well by Di Bernado.
86 minutes – Penalty – as the ball crossed into the Haven box it struck Jones’ arm. Maybe a little harshly, the referee judged it as deliberate. Dixon stepped up to score his second of the game. DiBernado did get his fingers to the ball but was unable to keep it out. 2-3
With the final whistle blowing minutes later, the relief for Lewes, and disappointment for Haven were both palpable.
