Haven Held in Stalemate by Opposition and Conditions

Table toppers Peacehaven had to settle for a point on Saturday, as their league match with Faversham Town ended goal less.

After having a couple of recent matches postponed, Haven looked pleased just to be playing again after their enforced break.

With so many other games called off, club officials achieved a small miracle in getting the game on, thanks in no part to a great deal of tarpaulin and sand.

Whilst dramatically improved on the past few days, conditions for a football match were still far from ideal. In addition to a very heavy pitch that cut up after 20 minutes, there was a strong swirling wind all afternoon that favoured Faversham especially in the first half.

That said, it was clear from the kick-off that Faversham were not here just to make up the numbers. Having already taken three points off Haven earlier in the season, backed by a very vocal travelling support, Town were keen to win every ball.

Jamie Brotherton and Dan McLaughlin had a couple of chances, but it was the visitor’s forwards who came closest in the early exchanges. First David Butterill headed just over, and then rasping shots from Ollie Bankhole and Jack Harris went begging.

Haven’s Anthony DiBernado was the busiest keeper, as Harris in particular drew several fine saves in quick succession.

The wind was causing havoc for both sides, but especially Haven, as passes, crosses and shots that normally would be pinpoint all went astray.

Leading scorer Charlie Walker provided some bright spots in the first half, with a brace of well taken shots that just missed the target.

As the teams turned around, Haven were fortunate not to be behind but for some last ditch defending and fine saves.

Matters were more balanced in the second half as the wind subsided a little, and Haven returned to their passing game as best they could.

Walker did well with a floated free kick, and a shot that just scraped over the bar. He was also adjudged to be offside from a Josh Jones through ball.

For the remainder of the match, Faversham allowed Haven to attack, preferring to hit them on the break, which they did repeatedly against the wind.

A rather optimistic penalty appeal by the home side was waived away, just before one final scramble in the Town box as the final whistle blew.

Overall, in a match that Town just about shaded, a point each was a fair result.
