As the scoreline suggests, as a football spectacle this game was instantly forgettable - but the match itself was memorable for all the wrong reasons !!
The early signs where good for Peacehaven as they nearly went ahead within 5 minutes. A flowing move saw Dave Altendorff and Scott Marshall combine to set up a Carl Dunk cross which found Ashley Rees and his attempt just scraped over the bar.
Soon after, a clever ball from Wes Millis put Tom Levitt clear of the defence, but he was unable to capitalise, and on 15 minutes Kane Louis picked out Ashley Rees in the area, but his low shot was well saved by Mark Oldroyd in the home goal.
Jake Buss was called into action soon after, first tipping over a long range effort, then easily saving a close range shot from Liam Baitup, who undoubtedly should have made more of his chance.
Oldroyd again did well to keep Ashley Rees at bay just before the break with two saves down at the foot of his post. On the whole, Peacehaven will have been pleased with their first half performance, if not a little frustrated at not being in front - but the 45 minutes that lay ahead could never have been foreseen by anybody.
Sadly, the second half never really got going. Every move seemed to be interrupted by some over zealous refereeing and tempers became frayed, to say the least. Leo Day received an instant red for a challenge on Scott Marshall, there was a flurry of yellow cards, some fierce tackles were going unpunished, and then United's Assistant Manager, Tobi Hutchinson, was ordered from the dug-out for protesting about not being given the chance to make a substitution.
You sensed an explosive situation was boiling up but, thankfully, there where no more cards. Despite the 15 minute one-man advantage, Peacehaven where unable to find that elusive goal. With full time approaching a Dan Smith cross found Ashley Rees near the penalty spot and his angled header beat Oldroyd, but cruelly span wide of the post.
Peacehaven will be kicking themselves that they didn't claim the points here - which is risky, because even that might have warranted a yellow card!.
