MATT CHEESEMAN scored his first goal of the season as Peacehaven eased past Steyning 3-0 in the FA Vase replay on Tuesday evening.

After Saturday’s titanic battle which saw Marcus Allen grab a 93rd minute equaliser for Peacehaven, this game was always going to be finely poised and hotly contested.

In the first minute both Steyning and Curt Ford for Peacehaven carved out chances and with just six minutes played Allen got on the end of a Jake Brocklebank free kick and went agonisingly close.

On 20 minutes, Peacehaven were one up when Cheeseman (pictured) pounced on a half cleared ball to fire home.

Seven minutes later Manni Okorougo made himself some space but the home keeper got behind his effort to make the save.

With the game approaching half time Steyning were playing some good football and it took two brilliant saves from Loz Sanded in the Haven goal to keep the home side out.

Half time: Steyning Town 0, Peacehaven & Telscombe 1.

With just two minutes of the second period played, Okorougo found some space and drilled the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 with his first goal for the club.

Steyning came back at Peacehaven with a header which went close and the game was now turning into another brilliant cup tie between two committed teams.

On 54 minutes Haven threatened again when Jake Le Grange followed up a shot with a great header which the keeper pushed out to Cheeseman whose effort went over the bar. And five minutes later Le Grange was one on one with the keeper but his effort was hacked off the line by a defender.

Peacehaven were now firmly into their stride, moving the ball around and making it difficult for the hosts.

When Steyning did attack, Haven’s defence, commanded by Marcus Allen stood firm and dealt with everything asked of them.

With the clock ticking down, Steyning, with nothing to lose, began to gamble. But in the 84th minute it was effectively game over as Ford got on the end of a fabulous diagonal ball which he controlled with aplomb and dispatched it past the keeper to make it 3-0 and game over.

Final score: Steyning Town 0, Peacehaven & Telscombe 3.

The two teams meet again on Saturday - the third encounter in eight days, in a league game at The Sports Park. This one kicks-off at 3pm.
