PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE edged ever closer to league leaders Eastbourne Town with a 2-1 home win against Little Common on Friday night.

Going into Saturday’s round of games, only one point now separates second place Peacehaven and Eastbourne Town in top spot.

Just a few weeks ago it looked like the league title race was done and dusted but in recent weeks Town have seen an alarming dip in their form which they will be hoping to put right when they visit AFC Uckfield. And now with Peacehaven and Lancing hot on their heels, and with Peacehaven due to visit Eastbourne Town on December 21, it now looks like it’s all still to play for.

What has typified Peacehaven’s season so far is that in no two consecutive games have Peacehaven fielded the same starting eleven, and for the Little Common encounter, manager Mark Shutt made four changes to the starting line-up from Tuesday's 3-1 win at Whitehawk for what was to be their third game in six days.

What is even more remarkable is that whichever eleven are chosen to start, the standard and style of play is always top draw, and that was the case on Friday night.

This was the first time that Peacehaven had staged a senior first team match on a Friday night, and with more than 200 fans in attendance, it was clearly popular with the supporters.

On the field Peacehaven quickly got into their stride and on 12 minutes Matt Cheeseman hit the Little Common bar with a brilliant 25 yard shot.

The visitors were a well organised outfit and looked dangerous going forward and came within an upright of taking the lead when Sam Cruttwell went on a superb mazy run and got in behind Peacehaven’s defence only to see his effort deflect off the far post.

But Peacehaven were beginning to put together a series of brilliant moves and laid siege on the visitor’s goal, but couldn’t find the breakthrough. That was until the 29th minute when a cross from the left was bundled home by stylish defender Connor Morley (pictured) for his first goal for the club.

The home side continued to take the game to the visitors with the speed of Tyler Capon and Charlie Lambert unsettling the Little Common back line.

With 36 minutes played, Haven were awarded a free kick about 25 yards out. Free kick wizard Jake Brocklebank set himself to take the kick and struck a delicious shot which left Dan Ryan in the Little Common goal rooted to the spot. Brocklebank was superb all evening and with Cam Wiltshire and Cheeseman they drove Haven throughout the game.

The home side continued to dominate but Little Common still looked dangerous and were creating chances on the break. And one of these chances saw Alieu Secka make an excellent save to keep the visitors at bay.

Peacehaven continued to press with Aaron Daniels and Capon all going close, but still the decisive third goal would not come.

In injury time, Little Common were awarded a free kick just inside their half and nearly scored the goal of the season when with Secka off his line an audacious shot landed on top of the Haven stopper’s goal.

With four minutes of added time played, Little Common pulled one back through Ryan Alexander but with not even enough time to restart, it was too little too late.

Final score Peacehaven & Telscombe 2, Little Common 1.

Peacehaven & Telscombe: Secka, Le Grange, Bant, Morley, Wiltshire, Allen, Capon, Brocklebank, Lambert, Cheeseman, Daniels. Subs: Lira, Fitzpatrick, Popham, Marshall (S), Sanded.

Attendance: 213.
