George Cook corner earns Peacehaven a point

Peacehaven managed to come back from behind to salvage a point away in the sunshine at Shoreham thanks to a Cook goal directly from a corner.

On the stroke of the hour mark, Cook, who has caused constant danger this season from set pieces, managed to curl the ball straight in from the corner flag and cancel out Shoreham’s lead.

After a slow start by the boys in black and white, Shoreham grabbed an early lead from a Max Howell goal. Their winger picked the ball up on the edge of the box, twisting and turning before slotting it past Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke in net.

Harry Pollard thought he had equalised in the 38th minute, however the linesman’s flag went quickly up to cancel the celebrations. A great ball from Cook was met by the centre-half at the back post but he just mis-timed his run, meaning his side went in one down at half time.

Peacehaven were dominant on the ball, having the lion’s share of possession but the defensive five man unit of Shoreham were proving difficult to break down. Max Hollobone had a number of long range chances that tested Sam Marsden in goal, the pick of the bunch being a side-winding volley on the edge of the box that sailed just over the bar.

After Cook’s spectacular goal, Peacehaven went straight for more with a parading run by Harry Docherty on the right wing but they unfortunately couldn’t get a shot off at the end of it.

As both teams began going gung-ho to find a winner, the game opened up but the better chances fell Shoreham's way. Callum Esnoff cleared the ball off of the line for Peacehaven after Lewes Beebee’s header from a corner. As well as Howell firing a shot across the face of goal, only to hit the far left post in the 78th minute.

Peacehaven did have chances to secure the three points as well, a penalty claim from captain Ross Barclay was waved away by the referee despite his heavy appeal. The captain also stepped up to take a last minute free-kick, which looked destined for the bottom corner but Marsden got across quickly and managed to hold onto it, just before the final whistle was blown.

With just two games left, Peacehaven welcome Crawley Down Gatwick to Centenary Park next Saturday for a 3PM kick-off as they both battle for eighth spot.
